EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
