Department of Justice Intervenes in Lawsuit to Block California's Congressional Map
The US Justice Department have officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to halt the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Broader Implications
This courtroom confrontation represents the major response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has spread across multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will influence the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
